What is The Meek One about?

The Meek One (Кроткая, also sometimes translated as The Gentle Creature) is a psychological story on the topics of suffering, superiority, and faith. It echoes many of the themes in Dostoyevsky's other works such as the Notes from the Underground, Crime and Punishment and The Idiot.

Fyodor Dostoevsky's journey into the human soul!

Fyodor Dostoevsky was a 19th century Russian writer, considered one of the greatest psychologists in world literature. Dostoyevsky is known a deep explorer of the human soul, and is sometimes referred to as one of the first existentialists. His literature explores human psychology and also engages with philosophy, religion and emotion.

How was this Russian translation made?

Literal but understandable

This Russian book translates words in an individual and literal way except where that harms understanding. For example

О́чень Very
уж indeed
я I
тогда́ then
развесели́лся. became elated.

The natural English word order would be different but, despite that, the English phrase is clearly understandable as is. Because of that, we have left it intact.

Yet this would probably be more challenging:

Де́ло[The] matter
в[is] in
том,that
что…that…

As you can see, in some instances, if translated literally, the phrase would be rather hard to understand. Thus we chose a more understandable translation:

Де́ло в том, что…The fact is that…
Translated by Jamie Abbott, MA at the University of Cambridge.
